Emergency Prep: What To Do Before Disaster Strikes

The recent devastating fires in Los Angeles serve as a stark reminder that natural disasters can strike with little warning, leaving many scrambling to protect themselves and their loved ones. While we cannot prevent unexpected catastrophic events, proper preparation can improve our chances of staying safe.

Here are critical actions to take immediately:

  • Create an emergency kit or “go bag.” Stock it with non-perishable foods and water, essential medications, first-aid supplies & stop-the-bleed kit, flashlights, batteries, an extra cell phone charger, and a water purification device.

  • Buy a fireproof and waterproof box. Keep important documents and irreplaceable, personal keepsakes stored prior to emergency situations.

  • Create a digital backup of all vital documents (passports, birth certificates, insurance policies). Store them in a secure cloud service – this ensures you can access them even if physical copies are destroyed.

  • Store contact info of neighbors in your phone. Check-in on your neighbors, especially the elderly.

  • Keep emergency cash easily accessible.  During disasters, ATMs and credit card systems may not work because of power outages.

  • Create a detailed home inventory with photos and videos of your belongings for insurance purposes. Store this information in your phone, email, and in a secure cloud service.

  • Develop a family emergency plan. Have your kids memorize phone numbers of parents/guardians and contact info of a trusted relative outside of the immediate area.

  • Always keep your vehicle's gas tank at least half full. Remember that preparation isn't about fear – it's about empowerment. Taking these steps now can help ensure you're ready to act decisively when every moment counts.
